Why do we have muscles and what is their purpose?
To begin, the human body has approximately 605 muscles. I say approximate
because scientists have never been able to determine the exact amount due to
variations in a human’s body.
Your muscles keep your blood flowing. Muscles turn energy into
motion.
Without muscles, it would be impossible to do anything. For example: To
express your spoken words we use muscles in our larynx, tongue and mouth for you
to run, dance, or fight we use the skeletal muscles.
I bet you didn’t know you have 3 types of muscles:
Cardiac muscle is in your heart. It is also called the “twitch muscle” that
contracts involuntarily
Smooth muscle located in your digestive system, airways, bladder and blood
vessels. For women this is also located in the uterus.
Skeletal muscle is the muscle used when we exercise. These muscles attach
to bones and come in pairs; one to move the bone in one direction and the other
to move it back the other way.
It is important to use your muscles as they can atrophy (shrink).
You might think Massage Therapists are just massaging your body in random
motion, however they have been trained in the anatomy of the body and they are
working different muscles in different directions to get the best results for
you.
Since your muscles keep your blood flowing, massage therapy can relax
your tense muscles and provide you with improved circulation throughout your
whole body.
Inside our body is a membrane called FASCIA, which is a sheet or band of
fibrous connective tissue enveloping, separating, or binding together muscles,
organs, and other soft structures of the body. Your therapist will work through
the Fascia and break up any knots or tension you may have. Going deeper your
therapist will then be able to work on your individual muscles.
